Hallo! My name is Shelby Harrison and I will be teaching German at Peoria Notre Dame this year. I will also be teaching literature as well as providing additional English support to our international students. I am very excited to join the PND family!
I received my first Bachelor's of Arts in German Studies from Illinois State University. While I was there I studied in Bonn, Germany for a year. There I took German classes at the university level and also worked as a teacher's assistant in a German high school. At ISU, I also worked at the English Language Institute as a teacher working with international students to improve their English.
My love of German started as freshman in high school with the influence two wonderful teachers. The German culture is so unique and there are many things I hope to share with my students. One of the best ways we can understand another culture is through their language.
I then attended Bradley University for a second Bachelor's of Arts in English Secondary Education. I have always has a love for English, both the language and literature. I've known that I've wanted to be a teacher since the first grade and I am excited to meet all of the students at PND!
Some of my hobbies include: reading, photography and hanging out with my poodle Albert (Alby). I also like to spend time outdoors and with friends and family. One of biggest passions is traveling. I actually spent the summer abroad with my Grandma! :)
As a teacher, I value a positive learning environment where each student feels comfortable expressing his or herself. Learning a new language is a challenging task, but should be enjoyable. I strongly believe that immersion is the best way to learn a language. We will jump in with both feet in order to fully learn both the language and culture. If not, we will use a lot of charades to make our way through! :)
Feel free to email me with any questions or concerns!
